Senior Pet Care: Making Quality of Life Part of Quantity of Life

Senior Pet Care

Your senior dog or cat is a valued member of your family. They deserve health care designed for their unique needs and phase of their life. At Clinton Veterinary Hospital we believe good senior pet care can literally add years to your pet’s quantity of life, as well as make those years quality ones.

Why Senior Pet Care Matters

If animals age 7 years for every year that passes, it means an annual exam is equivalent to an exam every 7 years for a human. That makes your pet’s annual checkup very important, and it’s why we recommend two checkups per year for senior pets.

We’ll conduct screenings to look for your pet’s risk level for conditions like:

Regular lab work we recommend for senior pets, includes:

  • Complete blood count, to check for infections, leukemia, and anemia
  • Blood panel work, to monitor the function of internal organs
  • T4 blood test to evaluate thyroid function

Senior Pet Care Exams and Screenings

At your pet’s exam, our staff will also talk to you about other recommended preventive care:

Senior Pet Care Diet and Nutrition

As your pet ages, obesity can be problematic, as the extra weight wears and tears on your dog or cat’s joints. Diet adjustments may be needed to keep weight issues under control and reduce the potential for high blood pressure and heart disease, too.

We carry prescription diets for senior pets, which have been proven to aid in digestive issues, allergies, and other conditions. We also carry supplements that have been shown to help with issues like arthritis. For example, fish oil supplements and chondroitin, combined with a specialized activity plan, is an alternative treatment for this condition.

If you have questions or need advice about care for your senior dog or cat, please get in touch with us today. It’s never too late to bring your old family friend the care he or she deserves.
